She was the daughter of Bernabe and Carmela VG Rodriguez who lived in Montclair for 37 years and predeceased her. Born in Havana, Cuba, the family moved to New York in 1961 and soon after to Europe, living in Paris, France, and Madrid, Spain, before settling in Montclair. After graduation from the French Lycée of New York and attending Montclair State University she transferred to California, where she obtained a Master’s in French Literature from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Further studies and postgraduate work at the Sorbonne University in Paris led to a teaching career in New England prep schools, including Wykham Rise, in Washington, Ct., Merrimack College in Massachussets, and Philips Academy in Andover, Mass.
She was married in Montclair in 1981 to Christopher Walter, a visiting professor at Philips from the UK, and the couple moved to Oxford, England for one year in 1982 before coming back to teach and Philips, where she lived until the end of her life. She published a Spanish language text book Una Vez Más with Longman Publishing and Yale University. Surviving her are her husband Christopher Walter, of Andover, Mass., Audrey Langton, her mother-in-law, of Surrey, England, daughter and son Sophia and William, of Manhattan, and brothers Ignacio, of Potomac, Md. and Rafael VG of Montclair. A private memorial service will be held in the chapel at Philips Academy in Andover.
She died after a bout with lymphoma
